Fashion Week

Since Fashion Week 2008 is soon to be upon us, I thought I’d post my experience of Fashion Week 2007. It was AWESOME! I bid on Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors tickets in the fall of 2006 at the Richmond SPCA’s Fur Ball (their big fancy fundraiser). I took Yarb, as her Christmas gift – and we had a BLAST!

We were one of the lucky ones – you can’t BUY tickets to Fashion Week and we were going to be inside the famous tents at Bryan Park…
Our first show was Oscar de la Renta.

And Oscar himself!
I’ve retrived the emails I sent from NYC to my friends post show:

today was the oscar de la renta show – it was just FABULOUS! so awesome! here is what socialiterank.com (unfort, this website is no longer active) has to say:
TOP FIVE SHOWS TO BE THOROUGHLY INFESTED WITH SOCIALITES:
Oscar de la Renta: He’s grasping 10021 between his magical fingers and he’s not letting go. For the society, this is THE show to score tickets to. The ladies will gasp, cheer and applaud at every look in a beautiful, privileged unison.
– and –
Right now, the real 10021 divas are gracing the front-row seats of both the Carolina and Oscar shows.
it was totally unreal – the whole experience! the paparatzi was there in full effect – barbara walterspiper perabo were the main famous peeps that we saw. the creative direcor of Elle was there as was the editor of Elle Decor. lots of socialites (i am assuming, since the photographers loved them and i didn’t recognize them!) and that was all before the show started!oscar’s evening wear was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! i loved most all of his dresses! the models were sooo thin – and tall. the dresses were simple, classing and yet modern at the same time. lots of fur trim – gorgeous pinks and also black and a lovedly taupe dress with a tulle skirt. new trend – black hose / tights with everything!

i was literally sitting on the edge of my seat the entire show! it lasted around half an hour. our seats were pretty good – maybe 4 rows up – so definately peeps sitting behind us and the standing room was at the very top. the music was also really great – somewhat techno but still melodic. i really, really enjoyed the whole thing! all the socialites were carrying HUGE bags – i feel like i need to get a new, and REALLY BIG bag.

we ended up wearing skinning jeans and sweaters. it was much better to be dressed as we were, than to be one of the ones “trying too hard”. and we fit right in!

anyway, i’ll write more after the micheal kors show!

xoxo

p.s. scooter – full length puffy jackets are all the rage here in nyc! you are so cutting edge!

And our second show was Michael Kors:

Here is what I emailed after the show:
i just got back from the Micheal Kors show – INCREDIBLE! that is all i can say – it was effing INCREDIBLE! lots of star sightings, so let’s start from the beginning…the first celeb we saw was Anna Winter (Editor-in-Chief of Elle; the character that “The Devli Wears Prada” is based off of…) with her was her Editor-at-Large of Elle, I dunno his name, but he is a really tall, African-American man. He was also at the Oscar show on Monday. She is super thin and stylish, as one would expect.

the next celeb spotted at the show was the Dutchess of York, Fergie. She looks just like she does on tv. seemed very friendly – some random peeps were going up to her to talk to her!

the bald guy from “what not to wear” and “fashion police” was there – in a bright orange jacket. he was also at oscar’s show.

the next celeb we saw was jane k., the secretarty from ally mcbeal. she has a lot of blone hair! and is quite petite.

so… the next star was a biggie – jeanne’s lookalike Kim Catrall from sex in the city! she looked great! ee got some great shots of her after the show when she was talking to the media. i’ll send them out once they are downloaded.

the donald was there with melana – he looks exactly like he does on tv! she was wearing a huge fur hat – and looks very glamorous!

both this show and the oscar show was in the main tent, there are smaller shows in the salon and another smaller tent. this time we sat on the other side of the tent than we did for the oscar show.

the music was much more pop-ey than at the oscar show. mainly “groove is in the heart” and some gwen stefani. and sportsware made up most of his pieces. he did have some male models as well. neutrals were everywhere – and lots of fur. the few colors that did show up in his clothing were orange and blue. but mainly just grays, khakis, browns, blacks, golds and silver. he also had patents leathers.

large bags were everywhere. on the models and spectators. i am coveting a chanel black patent leather bag – huge! i went to saks to see if i could just hold it and check the price, but they had none left! i saw no less than 5 ladies carrying that bag!

for you richmond gals, tinsley (mercer) mortimer was there – and she is ranked #2 on socialiterank.com (the last ranking time frame she was ranked #1).

i didn’t wear a drop of make-up the entire time i was in nyc! i didn’t even shower for this show (i did for oscar) – just call me pigpen 😉 the ponytail is quite in, which makes me happy! and so are skinny jeans / pants. i felt out of style when i was not wearing skinny pants – even the men are wearing skinny pants!

i am headed home in a few hours – hopefully i’ll catch up with you all in person soon!

xoxo

And here are other random photos from our fun 5 days in NYC…
et.jpg Yarb & I in Bill and Juan’s apartment (they took 2 apartments and made into one, very Sex in the City-esque)
elenis.jpg tingcc.jpg Yummy – cupcakes! I have always loved them, and then they became so en vouge!

Here is all of us – this was a Sun or Mon night – we went to dindin and then out DANCING at a gay club. Very fun. I felt like such a city gal!!!!
Thanks, Boom, for letting Yarb and I go up yo NYC. It was the experience of a LIFETIME (though I’d love to do it again… and I hear SCAN has gotten their hands on some Fashion Week tickets to auction off at the Progressive Dinner event…).

Wrinkles!!!!

My friend Kandy got a new pup for Chrismas – a Vizsla names Peyton. He is adorable – I haven’t yet met him in the flesh, but I cannot wait! You be the judge…

SOOO cute! I have to see him before all his wrinkles are gone…

Boom is biased against him since Peyton is the name of the QB for the Colts, who are the NE Pats arch enemies… funny email from Kandy, when she was sending out these photos:

Jams (her fiancee) named him, mostly because he paid for 83% of the purchase price. As Vizslas are running dogs, he recognizes the honorary naming is a misnomer, as Peyton Manning is really not very mobile.

Books

I have been reading a bit – had some time when I was on the cruise…

sb.jpg

Kim had this book – and it is all about being vegan.  After reading the small section they have on how animals are treated, I cried and cried.  I haven’t eaten any meat since.  I just can’t.  This book has me wanting to do more research and also read more about lots of subjects.  Which is good – I like it when books make you think, and then also make you want to take action (of any sort).

When Marm, Dad and I were at Costco, I also picked up their cookbook:

sbk.jpg

I will be making the veggie enchaladas this week and the vegan choc chips next week.

I am not sure that I can become vegan just yet, but I am willing to try to be a veg head (vegetarian) for now.  Hasn’t been too hard – and really, I haven’t missed anything too much.  But I did make chocolate chip cookies today (to use up the choc chips we currently have) and used eggs in ’em (to help use up the eggs we have).

I am undecided if I will eat eggs moving forward.  I do love them and can see how I might miss them.  Someday I’d like to have 2 hens in my back yard so I can gather eggs from them – keep them in a fenced in area where they can cluck about and have a small hen house for them to sleep in.  I think I will try to go to the farmers market on Thursdays to buy my eggs.  When Jojo and I were part of the organic farm share, the hens they had did have a small hen house, but were allowed to roam around as they wished.  As it should be…

I txted my friend Kandy to let her know I was becoming a veg head, and when she txted back wanted to know why, I replied  “Because I need a change” and really I think that is my main selfish reason why (along with various other more altruistic reasons).

Whilst roaming the book section at Costco, I also picked up the following:

eatpraylove.jpg

I had heard a lot of buzz about this book and had been wanting to check it out, so I got it.   I finished it on the plane ride to CLT (to get home to VA) – and it was good.  Funny and amusing and brought up a lot of ideas that are interesting and that perhaps I can do a bit more research on…  At one point, it did bring tears to my eyes.  So I would recommend it.

And currently I am reading the following:

100yrs.jpg

My great friend, Coco, loves this book.  She is really smart and intellectual and an ENGLISH major, so I have been intimidated by this book for some time (I think I got it around Thanksgiving 07).  But, since I had finished Eat, Pray, Love and my flight was delayed, I had no choice but to start reading.  And I am really liking it!  There is a family tree on one of the first pages (THANK GOODNESS!), and I keep having to refer back to it – I am bad with names and lots of the names are very similar or have other names within their names.

While I was away, Boom and I talked and he said something to the effect that he wanted to watch less TV and read more. I really hope he is sincere in that desire.  as I don’t have too much of an issue cutting out TV, and I would love for us to spend time next to each other reading.  Dorky, I know, but good, I think.

Back

So I made it through my LCE (Last Cruise Ever) and it really was a lot of fun to be there with Al and spend more quality time with the other bridesmaids / house party (even though we were on ghetto Carnival).  So many funny things happened:

Al – “VIPs, VIPs, we are effing VIPs!”  You definately get the award for Best Sport Bachlorette!   Get those shoulders shrugging!  AND the Black Jack Tourney winner of $500!!!!

Ash – D0uche was the word of the trip.  Can be used as a noun (“What a d0uche”) or adjective (“That was a d0uche hand” when playing blackjack and getting dealt bad cards) or verb (“They are d0uching” – as an answer to What the heck are they doing? and most everything else)  or adverb / pronoun (tho, since I don’t have a strong grasp of what these parts of speech are, I cannot give examples); and “We’re going down!”

Kim – OMG!  Loving Ash’s imitation of Amy Polander (sp?) of SNL imitating Britney Spears.  HI-larious; and the VIV – Very Important Vegan

Tiff – Flashbacks from my FCR (First Cruise Ever) – Don’t do it, Al.  At the STRIPES Club (the only one open!)

Kel – bringing c0ntraband onto the ship (aka helium tank); and her plethra of STUFF (3 enormous roll bags, 3 huge boxes, lots of Ed Hardy, etc)

SS – SS smiles, or cries.  But was a good sport.

Me – Ovaries out!

Good times were had by all.  Especially by Blow-Up Ben.  He had a rockin’ time on the cruise, and was famous after his first night out!!!  Literally, other passengers that we did not know were taking pics with him when he was sitting at the bar.  And for all the days after our first night out, everyone was asking about Ben.

I will post photos soon, but won’t be able to put them all up until I get photos from my peeps in Tejas.

Starting Saturday around noon, DO NOT CALL OR TXT me!  Txts are going to cost me $0.25 each and calls are like $1.40 a minute!  I called Verizon to see if I could get on a cheaper plan for the week, but I was told mine was the cheapest available.

sigh…

I am purchasing pre-paid minutes for my internet connection.  At least they have wireless!

Ugh

I am planning a new fund raiser for SCANBourbon Street in Shockoe Bottom.  It is killing me!  The planning was hard, but the execution has been really difficult.  Obviously with a fund raiser, the point is to raise funds.  So we don’t have much of a budget – luckily people have been very generous and I am so thankful for them.

And, of course, with any new event, there are bound to be some snags.  The first one is… the invitations are not out yet, and the event is less than a month away!!!  Second… our location has very stringent insurance requirements, so we are dealing with that right now (specifically for the band). Third… we started talking to caterers in DECEMBER – (how dumb are we?!  Note to self / chair of event next year – line up as much as you can, but definitely catering, BEFORE the holidays.) and still do not have a caterer secured.  Hopefully we will select a caterer today or tomorrow.

What we do have are…. street performers!  With an artsy university in the same city, it wasn’t too hard to fine ’em.  However, after meeting with the leader, I am a little bit afraid they might frighten the attendees.  He was SO into his masks and the what not.  ugh…

I know it will all come together, but the icing on the cake is I am headed out of town for 10 days on Friday morning.  So basically I have today and tomorrow to get as much done as possible.  I will have my laptop and mobile phone, but I am sure I won’t want to be dealing with  SCAN stuff when I am on the cruise.

I am so anxious I wasn’t able to sleep as long as I wanted – got up at 530am instead of 6am.  Mind was spinning.  I am so anxious I feel kinda jumpy, like I have had caffeine, which I have not.  Like I want to jump out of my skin… or that my skin is itchy, no not itchy, but uncomfortable… why won’t my printer call me back?!  ugh…

LCE

On Friday I leave for Texas for my LCE (last cruise ever – thanks, Al, for the funny acronym) – it is Al’s bachlorette party cruise! My FCE (first cruise ever) was also with Al, for our friend Tiff’s bach party (that send-off was, evidently, not a good one as that marriage was short lived. but now Tiff is happily married ;-). I realized at that time that cruises are not my thing. I would rather be THERE instead of meandering on a very large vessel to get THERE. And the food situ kinda grosses me out, and I feel like the clientele is super cheesy (Al, of course, excluded).

But, since I love Al, I am, of course, happy to be going on my LCE! I am very excited to see her and spend some good quality time with her – and the other bridesmaids (although most of the other bmaids are Dallas / Dallas – type gals. I always feel under dressed, in a good way, when I am around them – and kinda crunchy and granola. Ya know what I think a lot of it is as well? They all like to stick together in a herd – not Al, but a lot of those girls seem to still need others at all times. I am not explaining myself very well – all I am saying is that I am not all that similar to many of Al’s other bmaids. For example, the other day I was reading Forbes and I was thinking – what would the other gals think if I brought this on the cruise with me? I won’t, since I have read the whole thing already…)

I am a little concerned whether or not I’ll readily be able to get ice for my ankle – I guess I will bring some ziploc bags and, worst case, I can get ice at meals. I also a a little worried about all my vitamins – I just need to remember to take all of them everyday! I think I will pack them by day – and then just carry them around with me at all times so that I will always have them with me at meals.

Today I was trying to sort out what I need to pack. Al sent me her packing list, which was a great help. However, I am not at my fightin’ weight (due to the tragedy), so I can’t bring a lot of what I might normally bring (and I realized how tight I used to wear my clothes – but I guess I was thin enough to pull it off!). So I am trying to purch a few things, but trying to get reasonably priced resort wear in Va at the beginning of Jan is proving to be difficult. And I say “resort wear” loosely – I actually don’t like wearing prints or dresses.

So what I have decided I need is white jeans and maybe a summery color (pale yellow / green / something like that) of pants. I have a white pair of pants that I will bring and plenty of stuff for the daytime. Too bad I don’t like dresses…. maybe I’ll try to branch out… I have to go to both big malls in this town tomorrow (exchange some Xmas gifts / buy a new iPod nano – my mini won’t keep a charge!) so I will see what I can see – and maybe try on some dresses (but probably not).
